The Meaning of DAU and MAU
DAU and MAU are common activity metrics.
But many founders see them and immediately chase daily active users and monthly active users mechanically.
That is risky.
Different products have different natural usage frequency.
A budgeting app may be used daily. A tax filing product may be used only a few times per year. A team collaboration product may be opened daily, while a resume tool may only be used intensely during a job search.
The point of DAU and MAU is not to make every product chase high daily activity.
It is to understand:
Do users keep coming back?
Does the product create a habit?
Does usage frequency fit the scenario?
Does activity represent real value?
What DAU and MAU Mean
DAU means Daily Active Users.
MAU means Monthly Active Users.
Simply:
DAU: how many active users in one day
MAU: how many active users in one month
But the key question is: what counts as active?
Do not automatically count opening the app as active.
A better definition should connect to core value.
Examples:
Complete a search
Generate a report
Create a project
Send an email
Export a file
Invite a member
Complete a learning task
If active is defined poorly, DAU and MAU become misleading.
What DAU / MAU Shows
Many teams look at the DAU / MAU ratio.
It shows what share of monthly active users return on an average day.
Example:
DAU = 1,000
MAU = 10,000
DAU / MAU = 10%
This means monthly active users are not returning daily at a high rate.
But 10% is not automatically bad.
It depends on the product.
Social, collaboration, task management, and messaging products usually need high frequency.
Tax, travel, resume, legal, or fundraising material products may not need daily use.
Judge Product Frequency First
Ask:
How often should users use this?
Daily?
Weekly?
Monthly?
Only when a specific event happens?
Categories:
High-frequency: chat, collaboration, task management, content consumption
Medium-frequency: analytics, marketing tools, learning tools, CRM
Low-frequency: tax, resume, contracts, travel planning, event registration
Event-based: launch, application, migration, audit, one-time project
Different frequency needs different metrics.
High-frequency products track DAU, WAU, and DAU/MAU.
Medium-frequency products track WAU, MAU, and core action count.
Low-frequency and event-based products track task completion, reuse cycle, satisfaction, and referrals.
Activity Should Connect to Core Actions
Suppose you build an AI resume tool.
If users open it daily but do not upload resumes, generate reports, or tailor applications, that is not meaningful activity.
Better active definitions:
Upload or update resume
Generate job match report
Export optimized version
Save a target job
Complete application material check
For an SEO tool, active should not only mean login.
Track:
Keyword searches
Content task creation
Ranking change review
Keyword database export
Article status update
Activity must map to product value.
High DAU Is Not Always Good
High DAU can sometimes indicate a problem.
Examples:
Users return daily because they cannot find results
Users keep trying but cannot complete tasks
Too many notifications cause frequent opens
Users manually do work the product should automate
High activity is not always high value.
Combine it with:
Core task completion
User satisfaction
Usage efficiency
Reason for repeat use
Payment and retention
If users return daily because the product is painful, that is friction, not growth.
High MAU Is Not Always Good
High MAU may come from one campaign, free resource, or short-term exposure.
Without retention and conversion, it has limited value.
Split:
New MAU
Returning MAU
Reactivated users
Paid MAU
Core active MAU
MAU by channel
The real question is whether monthly active users complete core value actions.
A Minimal Activity Dashboard
Track:
DAU
WAU
MAU
DAU / MAU
Core active users
Core actions per user
New user activation rate
Returning user rate
Paid user active rate
Add one sentence:
What caused the activity change this week?
Do not only look at up and down.
Explain why.
Summary
DAU is daily active users and MAU is monthly active users
The key is defining active correctly
Activity should connect to core value actions, not simple login
DAU / MAU can show stickiness, but only within product frequency context
High-, medium-, low-frequency, and event-based products need different metrics
High DAU can indicate friction, not value
High MAU can be one-time traffic without retention
Activity metrics should be read with activation, retention, payment, and user quality
Next, we will cover how to read retention rate.
