Product Hunt Launch Process

Product Hunt is not just a place to ask people for upvotes on launch day.

It is a launch surface for early adopters, makers, investors, developers, creators, and people who like discovering new tech products.

If you treat it only as a leaderboard, you will make bad decisions: last-minute vote requests, comment swaps, artificial support, or launching a product people cannot actually use.

A good Product Hunt launch is a complete process:

text
Confirm the product is ready
Prepare a clear product page
Polish launch assets
Respond actively on launch day
Review users and channels after the launch

This article references official Product Hunt materials:

Decide Whether You Should Launch

Not every product should launch on Product Hunt.

Product Hunt's featuring guidelines emphasize digital products and services, live products, usefulness, novelty, craft, and creativity.

If your product is only:

text
A waitlist
A concept page
Not usable yet
Missing the core workflow
A template, course, report, or service
Not closely related to tech products

Do not rush.

Product Hunt's guidance also says pre-launch products that only offer email sign-up are not eligible for the homepage.

Launching early is not always better. If users arrive and cannot experience value, you waste the attention.

Personal Accounts Matter

Product Hunt's official guidance says a personal account is needed to post a product. Company accounts cannot post, vote, or comment.

New accounts also need to complete onboarding, and Product Hunt notes that newly created personal accounts may need to wait one week before posting.

Do not create your account the night before launch.

Prepare at least two weeks ahead:

text
Create a personal account
Complete your avatar and bio
Follow related products and makers
Join a few real discussions
Learn the launch flow and rules
Confirm that you have posting access

Product Hunt is a community, not only a submission form.

The more your account looks like a real participant, the more natural launch day feels.

You Do Not Need a Hunter

In the past, founders often looked for a well-known Hunter.

Product Hunt now recommends posting your own product. A Hunter is not necessary, and posting yourself gives you more control over the launch.

That is good news for indie founders.

You do not need to depend on one person.

What matters more:

text
Is the product page clear?
Is the first comment thoughtful?
Do the visuals explain the product?
Will you reply actively?
Are real users ready to participate?

Do not make "finding a Hunter" the center of your launch strategy.

What to Prepare

Product Hunt's posting flow asks for specific materials.

Prepare:

text
Product URL
Product name
Short tagline
Topics
Pricing tag
Status: live / beta / not fully released
Thumbnail
Gallery images
YouTube video or interactive demo
Description within 260 characters
Promo code
Makers
Product X account
First comment
Launch date

Some official details matter:

text
Use the direct product page as the primary URL, not a press or blog post
Use only the product name in the name field
Keep the tagline very short
Choose only a few strongly related topics
Thumbnail should be square; Product Hunt recommends 240x240
Gallery images are recommended at 1270x760, and at least 2 are needed before the gallery is viewable
Videos only support YouTube links and should not be private
Description is limited to 260 characters

These are not small details.

Your assets decide whether someone can understand the product in seconds.

How to Write the Page

A good Product Hunt page answers four questions:

text
What is it?
Who is it for?
What pain does it solve?
Why should I try it today?

Keep the name clean.

Make the tagline concrete.

Do not stuff the description with vague buzzwords.

Weak:

text
AI-powered next-generation productivity platform for everyone

Better:

text
Turn messy meeting notes into client-ready follow-up emails

Users are not there to decode your vision.

They want to quickly decide whether the product matters to them.

The First Comment Matters

Product Hunt recommends kicking off the conversation with a comment after posting.

The first comment is not ad copy.

It should read like a maker's note to the community:

text
Who you are
Why you built the product
What specific problem it solves
Who should try it now
What feedback you want most
Whether there is a promo code
How you will respond to questions

It can be personal and direct:

text
Hey Product Hunt! I built this because...
The product is best for...
What I would love feedback on today is...

A strong first comment turns the launch into a discussion instead of a broadcast.

Understand Launch Timing

Product Hunt says the site operates in 24-hour periods in PST, and scheduled posts go live at 12:01 AM PST.

This matters for international teams.

For China-based teams, 12:01 AM PST is usually around late afternoon Beijing time, but daylight saving changes can shift the exact conversion. Always calculate the exact date before launch.

Before choosing a day, confirm:

text
Can the team stay online for 12-18 hours?
Will your main users be awake?
Are email, X, LinkedIn, and community posts ready?
Is someone ready for support and bug fixes?
Can analytics show real-time data?

A Product Hunt launch does not end after clicking submit.

Your replies and distribution matter.

What to Do on Launch Day

Use a rhythm:

text
After launch: check page, links, images, video, and first comment
Hour 1: notify core users and friends to try the product and leave real feedback
Hours 2-6: reply to comments and fix obvious issues
Hours 6-12: share on X, LinkedIn, newsletter, and communities
Hours 12-24: collect questions, keep replying, and track conversion

Do not incentivize votes.

Product Hunt says it uses automated detection, community reporting, and manual moderation to maintain voting integrity and remove non-genuine activity.

You can say, "We launched today, would love your feedback."

Do not say, "Please upvote," "must vote," or "vote for a reward."

Real interaction is more important than inflated numbers.

How to Ask for Support Without Causing Problems

You can share your launch link.

Use healthy language:

text
We launched on Product Hunt today
You are welcome to try the product
If it is useful, leave honest feedback on the page
We especially want feedback on onboarding / pricing / use cases

Avoid:

text
Help us climb the leaderboard
Please upvote
Vote screenshot gets a reward
Just leave any comment

The second group makes engagement look artificial and may trigger platform review.

Product Hunt should not become a contest of who can coordinate the most votes.

What to Review After Launch

Do not only track rank.

Review:

text
Visits
Signups
Activation rate
Paid conversions or demo bookings
Common questions in comments
Most loved features
Confusing messaging
Traffic sources
Media or partnership opportunities
Retention after launch

If you get Product of the Day but users do not stay, your product or positioning needs work.

If the ranking is average but you get high-quality customers, partners, or investors, the launch can still be valuable.

Product Hunt's value is not only launch-day exposure.

It can become:

text
Social proof
Early user feedback
Website badge material
SEO backlink
Media reference point
Future sales or fundraising material

A 14-Day Launch Checklist

Use this schedule:

text
T-14: confirm account access and study similar launch pages
T-10: finalize positioning, tagline, and first comment draft
T-7: prepare thumbnail, gallery, demo video, and FAQ
T-5: get 10-20 real users to test and give feedback
T-3: create a draft and check all fields and links
T-1: schedule distribution and prepare support
T Day: launch, reply, distribute, and track data
T+1: review comments, conversion, problems, and next iteration

If the product is not clear enough, do not force the launch.

Postponing is better than wasting an unready launch.
